STOCKTON RECORD -- It was a long time ago that he was a high-jump champion; just 5 foot 7 inches tall, he high-jumped a record 6 feet, 5½ inches while at San Francisco State University. He competed against NBA Hall of Fame basketball player Bill Russell.
But Mathis set athletics aside and focused on singing.
He attributes that decision to his dad, who he regularly describes as his “best pal. He was humming or singing to himself and that’s the reason that I sing. When I was a little kid from the time I could walk my dad was singing to me.
“I was fascinated by it and naturally he paid more attention to me and suggested I sing.”
