LOS ANGELES LOYOLAN (LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY) -- Born in 1941 in Los Angeles, Dater was raised in her father’s Hollywood movie theatre. She lived most of her life in California, going on to study art at UCLA. Later, she earned her master’s degree at San Francisco State University in 1966, focusing all her energy on photography.

“I love people,” Dater said. “When I started in photography, I gravitated towards wanting to photograph people — just discovering that I could say something and say how I feel about people.”
