Professor McAfee Comments on Deforestation of Amazon Forest

MONGABAY -- Kathleen McAfee, a professor of International Relations at San Francisco State University, notes that government changes at a federal level in particular can jeopardize these efforts. In a post on the website REDD Monitor in May 2016, McAfee wrote: “Just yesterday the interim president appointed as minister of agriculture a ‘soy tycoon’ and notorious deforester of the Amazon. … Now Brazil may soon see some combination of changes in state policies for land use, soy and other agricultural subsidies, increased export incentives in the context of the current economic recession or changes in enforcement practices.”
