SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER -- The free Sunday concerts, supported by city funds and donations, begin at 1pm and last for about two hours. The band, formed just a decade after the park’s creation, began performing in 1882.
In recent years, 30 musicians from the American Federation of Musicians Union Local No. 6 have played through the season, which runs from April to October. Concerts include marches, classical and pop music, at times featuring ethnic dance groups.
Wirgler, a clarinetist with degrees from San Francisco State University, spent his Army service in the Presidio, a member of the 6th Army Band. While performing and composing for various San Francisco organizations, Wirgler also was a music teacher with the Oakland Unified School District for 33 years.
